Key Results answer the pivotal question: “How do we gauge our success in achieving the objective?”

Example Key Results:

  • Limit our opponents to an average of 61 points per game.
  • Achieve a 40% success rate from the 3-point line.
  • Restrict our opponents to under 80 rushing yards per game.

Side Note: In the world of organizations, it’s commonplace for each department to have its own set of OKRs that harmonize with the broader company-wide OKRs. In athletics, consider a football team with three overarching OKRs for the entire team. Moreover, the team can establish separate OKRs for the offense, defense, and special teams units.


Step 3: Aligning Individual Goals with Your Team’s OKRs

Moving forward, it’s essential to engage with each and every player on your roster to collaboratively define personal goals that seamlessly align with your team’s OKRs. This process magnifies the significance of each athlete’s role and emphasizes the importance of setting and achieving goals that directly contribute to the team’s OKRs.

For instance:

  • The Objective is to clinch a championship.
  • One of the Key Results is a 40% 3-point success rate.

You can help a player set personal goals like achieving a 60% success rate in drills, hitting 45% from the 3-point line during practice, and maintaining 40% in live-action games. This player now possesses a concrete and quantifiable objective that is in perfect harmony with the Key Result identified by the team as a critical factor in achieving their overarching objective.

  • This meeting will allow the coach to measure the player’s progress, help support them if they are struggling, challenge them if they need to be pushed, and even pivot if it is not wielding the desired outcome.

Accountability & Transparency:

  • A vital part of the success of a team’s OKRs is the accountability and transparency of every player on the team.
  • You can achieve this by setting up a system that requires the players to check in on their progress, track their goals, and share with the team.
